The Bioengineering Graduate Program, centered in the Department of Bioengineering, is preparing future bioengineering leaders in academia, industry and government. The program is one of the most innovative graduate programs in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's College of Engineering, which is ranked 6th in the United States (2015) by U.S. News and World Report.

The Bioengineering Graduate Program has a long history of providing students with educational and research training and experiences that integrate the sciences of biology and medicine with the practices and principles of engineering. Students have the opportunity to work with any of more than 60 members of the Graduate Program Faculty, who represent numerous disciplines. The Department of Bioengineering was established to provide focused, high-quality educational and professional training through four degree programs.

Ph.D. in Bioengineering

The Doctor of Philosophy program is a diverse, multidisciplinary five-year program that emphasizes translational research at the intersection of engineering, biological and medical sciences. Students complete core curriculum and a thesis M.S. degree during the course of their doctoral studies. To continue in the doctoral program, students take a qualifying exam at the end of the first year, and after completing the M.S. thesis, students select their thesis committee and must pass the preliminary exam. Typically students complete their disseration and defend their doctoral thesis one and half to two years after the preliminary exam.

M.S. in Bioengineering (thesis and non-thesis options)

The Master of Science degree is a two- to three-year program, with thesis and non-thesis options. Only the thesis option is available to doctoral students. M.S. students complete core courses and thesis research. Students who choose the non-thesis option are required to take an additional eight credit hours of coursework in lieu of research credit.

Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Bioengineering

With the ongoing transformation of the global healthcare system -- especially to meet the challenges of an aging population -- technological advances in medicine and bioengineering are quickly evolving, as is the need for technical expertise in these fields. The Master of Engineering in Bioengineering degree program is designed for those looking to carve out a career in industry and be at the forefront of innovation. Highlights of the program include:

  • One-year, non-thesis professional master’s program
  • Choose from three concentrations: computational genomics (with focus on bioinformatics, genomic computational modeling and big data wrangling), bioinstrumentation (with focus on medical imaging devices), and general bioengineering
  • Curriculum that prepares students to take on first-level managerial and supervisory positions by combining technical training with business fundamentals
  • Co-curricular workshops in conflict management, communication and team building offer value-added professional skills outside of the classroom
  • Available on-campus as well as online
